The selection and training procedure of the career of an airman is very tough and it is believed that all these are highly rewarding as well. A career in Indian Airforce can be divided into two parts namely- technical and non-technical. The nature and responsibilities are different for technical and non technical. For both technical and non-technical cadres, the minimum age is 18 years. However, the educational qualifications differ from each other.

There are various routes to join the Indian Air Force

• Through NDA for which eligibility is 10+2 (Physics, Chemistry and Maths). The selection is through written test which is followed by SSB.
• After graduation/Post Graduation in Physics/Applied Physics/ Geo Physics, Meteorology an oceanography/Mathematics: Through selection test followed by AFSSB, can join the meteorology branch.
• One can also join in the engineering branch where eligibility is 10+2, with physics, chemistry and maths.
• Though CDS for which the eligibility is Degree of Recognized University (with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level) or Bachelor of Engineering. Written test followed by AFSSB.
• National Cadet Corps Special Entry (Through CO NCC Unit / DG NCC)
As a Air Wing Senior division 'C' Certificate holder of the National Cadet Corps, you can apply to the Flying branch of the Indian Air Force. Men can join the Air Force through this mode of entry and will be given a Permanent Commission.
• Graduates from recognized universities with degrees like B. Tech, and BE can also become eligible for direct commission in India airforce. However, it must be noticed that non-technical positions are only meant for men and not for women. Students studying in the final years of their graduation courses can also apply for the same but their appointment would depend upon their final results only. It is worth mentioning that the students having a NCC certificate with them get a certain preference in the final selection for the same categories in Indian Airforce.

The Indian airforce officers get a handsome salary which varies from one post/ position to another. The salary is a combination of various types of scales and allowances. These allowances include pay in pay band, grade pay, military service pay, kit maintenance allowance, transport, flying, and technical allowances. The pay varies between Rs. 6 lakhs and Rs. 12 lakhs all inclusive.

The officers get a large amount of other benefits apart from their salaries. These benefits include free accommodation with decent features, insurance cover for the soldier and his entire family, leave, Leave Travel Concession (LTC), Loans at rebated interest rates, ration, recreational facilities, pension for the retired personnel and family pension for their widows, Education, canteen facilities, and placement after successful completion of the service period.

Air Marshall M L Sethi, fighter pilot Karamveer Vashishth and Air Commodore Mohit Nayyar have set landmarks for the later generations of Indian Airforce personnel. Their work and achievements work as a source of inspiration for the future generations of personnel of the Indian airforce.

Marshal of the Air Force, Arjan Singh: Singh led No. 1 Squadron, Indian Air Force into command during the Arakan Campaign in 1944. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) in 1944, and commanded the Indian Air Force Exhibition Flight in 1945. He was Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), from 1 August 1964 to 15 July 1969, and was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 1965. He also became the first Air Chief Marshal of the Indian Air Force when, in recognition of the Air Force’s contribution in the 1965 war, the rank of the Chief of Air Staff was upgraded to that of Air Chief Marshal. Further, he is only one to have been accorded the rank of the Marshall of Air Force, a Five Star rank equivalent to Field Marshall in the Army.
